It all started out with a pen, paper and a dream. Rosemary Gonzales, the owner of Taza de Café had a normal nine to five job with the Colorado Department of Labor. She loved her job and was very good at it, but she knew she couldn't ignore the entrepreneurial fire burning inside of her. So one night while she and her boyfriend were brainstorming they came up with a concept for a coffee shop and what was to come ahead was a labor of love and hard work. Since that day Rosemary knew that no matter what stood in her way she was determined to follow her dreams of owning something of her own. Rosemary is no stranger to the service industry. For over twenty years she grew up in the El Bronquito Cafe, her family's restaurant in North Denver. So knowing what was to come ahead she pushed on. Taza de Café is a charming little coffee shop on the corner of 44th and Lowell only six blocks away from the old family restaurant but is a world of difference from the mom and pop shop she grew up in. Inside Taza de Café you can get all of the normal coffee shop standards such as bagels, muffins and croissants, but Rosemary decided she would offer something that the big companies were ignoring. She felt the Latino market was being underserved and neglected. So after carefully hand-picking (tasting) many products, she stocks a great assortment of panaderia type pastries and cookies she remembers growing up with. Along with your cappuccinos and café con leche you can enjoy conchas, empanadas, biscochitos, hand made sandwiches as well as Abuelita style hot chocolate. Although there is a Starbucks across the street in the Safeway, Rosemary feels that the corporate competition is good for her small neighborhood spot. If nothing else were offered at the shop it would win the award for charm. The wonderfully decorated interior is reminiscent of a metro Mexico City cosmo lounge spot. Inside you can relax, sip and munch by the corner chimenea or sit at one of its eight tables while listening to the upbeat sounds softly playing in the background.
